Marvin Windows and Doors’ proud heritage was built on uncompromising values, unwavering work ethic and honoring employees and customers alike. Even today, third and fourth generation members of the Marvin family working in all levels of the company embody the same spirit George Marvin did when he first came to Warroad, Minn., in 1904.

In this video from Marvin’s Heritage series, members of the Marvin family explain how the originating values and ethics live on as each Marvin seeks to leave the company even stronger for the generations to come.

Ed Salin is probably one of the best-known people in our hometown of Warroad, Minn. He started with Marvin Windows in 1964 as a truck driver and later spent many years in sales. Now he serves as a tours and training guide in our main factory, leading groups of builders, architects, dealers and other customers through the 2 million-square-foot facility.

We were talking with Ed recently about trust. That’s a subject that doesn’t seem to get a lot of discussion in the business world these days. But for Ed, it’s a fundamental part of his experience with Marvin, going right back to his early days with the company.

“The biggest thing about the Marvin heritage is honesty and trust,” Ed said. In his sales days, he thought of his role as less of a salesman and more of a guide, helping each customer make the right decision for their particular circumstances. And dealers always knew — as they do today — that Marvin would stand behind its products.

“We’ve stood behind products that we didn’t have to,” Ed said. “But first and foremost, we take care of our customers. We live up to that trust.”

Thanks, Ed — we couldn’t have said it any better.

That’s because everyone just calls him “Yogi.” Yogi supervises nearly 40 people as the lead on our Ultimate Casement line, overseeing the production of one of our most successful new products. For Yogi, his co-workers really are like a second family. “You get so close to people, so attached,” he said. “You want to help people, encourage them. I want to see people smile. It’s my job to make this a good place for them.” It’s also his job to make great windows for our customers. And because of the values ingrained in the organization, that’s no problem, Yogi said. “We give accountability to our people. That experience is what makes our windows flow out the door,” he said. “You can put that person with 20 years’ experience next to the new person. And they’re going to teach that new person. They’re very good at saying, ‘I’ve been here. I’ve done that. I want to show you.’ And that knowledge keeps going on for years and years and years. “Those are the people who have made us what we are.”

Susan Marvin, president of Marvin Windows and Doors, appeared today on Bloomberg TV’s “Bottom Line.” In this 6-minute interview, Susan discusses Marvin’s emphasis on taking the long view of what’s best for the company and its communities. Marvin believes its employees and their skills are its most valuable resource — and that’s why the company has done everything in its power to avoid laying off workers in the economic downturn.

It’s a great interview, and “Bottom Line” host Mark Crumpton was incisive and well-prepared. Crumpton really was in command of his material in a way that you don’t always see in the hectic world of business TV journalism.

Best of all, Crumpton invited Susan back for a return engagement. We love telling the Marvin story and are always happy when someone gives us a turn in the “bully pulpit,” so we’ll look forward to talking with Mark again in the future.

We’re proud to have been recognized by management expert Donald Delves in this great column for Forbes. Delves explores how the bond between Marvin, our hometown of Warroad and our valued workers has resulted in a healthy company and a healthy community.

Here’s an excerpt:

“Aside from the admiration and respect of employees, what has the company received in return for its commitment to employees? Marvin’s reliability as an employer has created a workforce that can be relied on for high-quality craftsmanship and meticulous quality control, sustained by strong esprit de corps stemming from a highly positive plant culture.”

Wow. We’re humbled. Thanks, Mr. Delves. We’re glad you recognize a culture that has been nurtured for generations — and that we will always work to strengthen.

Susan Marvin, president of Marvin Windows and Doors, received Bemidji State University’s 2011 Distinguished Minnesotan Award during commencement ceremonies today.

First presented by Bemidji State in 1981, the Distinguished Minnesotan Award acknowledges the contributions of current or former residents of the state who have performed exemplary service to the people of Minnesota or the United States. Susan Marvin’s father, the late William S. Marvin, received the honor in 1990. Other awardees include transplant surgeon Dr. John Najarian; polar explorer Ann Bancroft; and television journalist Don Shelby.

“Susan Marvin is a stellar example of what the Distinguished Minnesotan Award is all about,” said Richard A. Hanson, president of Bemidji State University. “A product of northern Minnesota, she has remained firmly rooted in her commitment to the area while generously sharing her leadership talents with state and national organizations.

“She is a superb role model for our students, leading by example and proving once again that hard work and commitment to community are keys to success,” Hanson said.

As president of Marvin Windows and Doors, Marvin oversees the window and door business of the Marvin Companies including the Marvin, Integrity and Infinity brands. Marvin serves on the boards of directors for Hormel Foods Corp., Marvin Lumber and Cedar Co., the University of Minnesota Foundation Board of Trustees and the St. Thomas College of Business Advisory Board of Governors. She is a member of the World Presidents’ Organization and Women Corporate Directors.

“I’m deeply honored to receive this award,” Marvin said. “This recognition reflects the accomplishments of a larger community — the amazing group of talented people whose goal is to lead an industry and have succeeded in doing so. So that’s why I am accepting this honor on behalf of my family and our community. The values I have lived by, the accomplishments, the success … they’re not mine alone. I am proud to share them with a long line of people who showed me that success is not an end in itself, but rather a means to an end. It is what allows us to make lives better for others.

“I’m especially proud to be recognized by a respected institution of higher education,” Marvin said. “Both my parents believed fervently that education, coupled with hard work, is the key to success in life. I’m confident that this year’s graduates will once again demonstrate the truth of that belief.”

Marvin has been an active member of various industry associations including the Window and Door Manufacturers Association and the National Council of the Housing Industry. She was a member of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and in 1995 served as board chair. In 1995, Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson honored Marvin for her contributions to Minnesota business.

Marvin is a 1979 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where she earned an undergraduate degree in journalism. She lives in Warroad and Minneapolis with her husband, Keith Schwartzwald.

Starting in 1912, Marvin Windows and Doors has committed to providing the best made-to-order wood window in the industry. But the commitment doesn’t start and stop with the window construction, Marvin staff work on architectural support, customer service, product support, research and development, sustainability and more.

In addition to the behind-the-scenes work of the dedicated Marvin staff, a thriving community is growing in a small Minnesota town, 6 miles south of the Canadian border. For the last four generations, Warroad, Minn. families working for Marvin Windows and Doors have created a tight-knit community of support.

Taking a closer look at the community of Warroad and the dedication given to each and every Marvin window, we’ve created the video series: Inside every Marvin window.

First of four videos: Inside every Marvin window: Unparalleled service.

Meet Lyle Kvarnlov. He’s worked for Marvin since 1986 and currently is the product services manager. He’d like to share his take on customer service.
