The new Ultimate Glider from Marvin Windows and Doors, already hailed as one of 2011’s best new building products, is now available in an all-wood version.

Marvin has re-invented the glider window with modern features and performance that breathe new life into this classic window. Previously available only in a clad aluminum exterior finish, the Wood Ultimate Glider now offers homeowners the beauty, warmth and performance of natural wood inside and out.

Marvin designed this versatile unit for elegance, durability and smooth operation. With its clean lines and recessed hardware, the Wood Ultimate Glider is sure to become a favorite of homeowners and builders alike.

The Clad Ultimate Glider, introduced earlier this year, was recently named one of the 101 Best New Products of 2011 by the editors of Professional Builder and Professional Remodeler magazines.

“Marvin reintroduced round tops to the homebuilding industry. Now we’ve reinvented another favorite,” said David Hipke, product planner for Marvin Windows and Doors. “This window is packed with features that add value. But perhaps its best features are its clean, elegant design and absolute ease of operation.”

The Wood Ultimate Glider features:

• One hand operation
• Patent pending handle and lock system
• Auto locking
• Low handle placement for ease of use – no reaching up
• Exterior of sustainably harvested pine
• Interior available in seven wood species: Pine, Douglas Fir, Cedro Macho, Mahogany, White Oak, Cherry, Vertical Grain Douglas Fir
• Interior also available in Factory Painted White Finish or Primed Wood
• Integrated weep system for drainage
• Several operating configurations

The Wood Ultimate Glider is the perfect choice for a host of building applications, including:

• Kitchen sink areas
• Decks and walkways
• Close lot lines
• Knee walls and lower levels
• Condominiums
• Multi-family units
• Assisted living

The Wood Ultimate Glider features a patent pending sash removal system built for easy operation. Plus, it can be seamlessly mixed and matched with other Marvin windows, such as the Ultimate Casement.

The Wood Ultimate Glider will give homeowners and builders a new reason to take a fresh look at gliders.

Marvin Windows and Doors is proud to announce the winners of the 2011 myMarvin Architect’s Challenge, an annual contest recognizing the best in architecture.

This year, for the first time, the judges also honored an international entrant: La Reserva Villa, a majestic, four-story villa overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in Sotogrande, Spain.

“These winning projects are an inspiring display of architecture,” said Brett Boyum, director of marketing for Marvin Windows and Doors. “Whether a faithful historic restoration or a completely original creation, these architects show what’s possible with inspiration and a focus on quality.”

This year’s judging panel includes acclaimed architects Carson Looney, FAIA, of Looney Ricks Kiss, Memphis, Tenn.; William Kreager, FAIA, of AECOM, Seattle; and Mark McInturff, FAIA, of McInturff Architects, Bethesda, Md.

About the 2011 myMarvin Architect’s Challenge

The myMarvin Architect’s Challenge recognizes the best architecture by practitioners in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The decisions of the judging panel are based on solution-driven design, classical beauty, innovative use of windows, and sustainability. Use of Marvin windows or patio doors in the project is a requirement.

Winners are flown to Minneapolis for an AIA tour of architecturally significant buildings in the Twin Cities. They also visit the Marvin factory in Warroad, Minn., where they learn more about how skilled craftspeople build every Marvin window and door precisely to order.

Susan Marvin, president of Marvin Windows and Doors, received Bemidji State University’s 2011 Distinguished Minnesotan Award during commencement ceremonies today.

First presented by Bemidji State in 1981, the Distinguished Minnesotan Award acknowledges the contributions of current or former residents of the state who have performed exemplary service to the people of Minnesota or the United States. Susan Marvin’s father, the late William S. Marvin, received the honor in 1990. Other awardees include transplant surgeon Dr. John Najarian; polar explorer Ann Bancroft; and television journalist Don Shelby.

“Susan Marvin is a stellar example of what the Distinguished Minnesotan Award is all about,” said Richard A. Hanson, president of Bemidji State University. “A product of northern Minnesota, she has remained firmly rooted in her commitment to the area while generously sharing her leadership talents with state and national organizations.

“She is a superb role model for our students, leading by example and proving once again that hard work and commitment to community are keys to success,” Hanson said.

As president of Marvin Windows and Doors, Marvin oversees the window and door business of the Marvin Companies including the Marvin, Integrity and Infinity brands. Marvin serves on the boards of directors for Hormel Foods Corp., Marvin Lumber and Cedar Co., the University of Minnesota Foundation Board of Trustees and the St. Thomas College of Business Advisory Board of Governors. She is a member of the World Presidents’ Organization and Women Corporate Directors.

“I’m deeply honored to receive this award,” Marvin said. “This recognition reflects the accomplishments of a larger community — the amazing group of talented people whose goal is to lead an industry and have succeeded in doing so. So that’s why I am accepting this honor on behalf of my family and our community. The values I have lived by, the accomplishments, the success … they’re not mine alone. I am proud to share them with a long line of people who showed me that success is not an end in itself, but rather a means to an end. It is what allows us to make lives better for others.

“I’m especially proud to be recognized by a respected institution of higher education,” Marvin said. “Both my parents believed fervently that education, coupled with hard work, is the key to success in life. I’m confident that this year’s graduates will once again demonstrate the truth of that belief.”

Marvin has been an active member of various industry associations including the Window and Door Manufacturers Association and the National Council of the Housing Industry. She was a member of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and in 1995 served as board chair. In 1995, Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson honored Marvin for her contributions to Minnesota business.

Marvin is a 1979 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where she earned an undergraduate degree in journalism. She lives in Warroad and Minneapolis with her husband, Keith Schwartzwald.

White painted factory finish now available on all pine products, wood or clad

Warroad, Minn., April 26, 2011 – Marvin Windows and Doors is living up to its “Built around you” promise by offering a factory-applied painted interior finish on all pine window and door products.

All pine Marvin windows and doors – both wood and clad – will be available in the factory-applied, White Painted Interior Finish option.

“Our customers asked for this option, and we heard them,” said Bill Boyd, product planner for Marvin Windows and Doors. “Our factory-applied painted interior finish is beautiful, durable and more environmentally friendly than on-site painting.”

The Marvin factory uses state of the art spray equipment to minimize any paint overspray or waste. VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) are captured and filtered to minimize impact to the environment. That makes the factory finish “greener” than a finish that’s applied on the jobsite.

The new finish option lets builders, remodelers and homeowners enjoy the many benefits of factory-applied paint:

Convenience: Eliminates the mess and time associated with painting windows at the job site – and ends the logistics hassle of having them painted off-site.

Durability: Our factory-applied paint topcoat meets or exceeds standards of the Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA TM 14-09 standards).

Integrated prime/paint system: A primer and paint system designed to work together for exceptional durability and paint adhesion.

Environmentally friendly: The water-based enamel primer and paint have zero Volatile Hazardous Air Pollutants (VHAPs) and low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Marvin’s White Painted Interior Finish will be introduced by region across the United States beginning in April and continue through the summer.

“We expect this to become a very popular option,” Boyd said. “Expanding our range of factory-applied finishes makes for one less item that builders, remodelers and homeowners will need to worry about during their projects.”

Annual cost vs. value report by Remodeling magazine once again finds wood windows are a top investment

Warroad, Minn., November 17, 2010 – Wood and clad wood replacement windows are once again among the most cost-effective home improvement projects, according to the 2011 cost vs. value report by Remodeling magazine. For both mid-range and upscale remodeling projects, wood windows ranked among the top five most cost-effective improvements in the magazine’s closely watched annual report.

For mid-range remodeling projects, wood windows returned 72.4 percent of their cost on resale, according to the report. For upscale remodeling projects, wood windows returned 67.5 percent of their cost on resale. Both figures ranked among the top five most cost-effective improvements.

“As the leader in made to order wood and clad wood windows and doors, we’re happy to see the enduring value of our products recognized by this influential report,” said Brett Boyum, marketing director of Marvin Windows and Doors. “Quality wood and clad wood windows are a smart buy for any remodeling project.”

Quality wood and clad wood windows also save money on energy. Replacing old windows with energy-efficient wood windows can save homeowners 15 to 25 percent on their monthly heating and cooling bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Save money, live more comfortably this winter with these simple tips from Marvin Windows and Doors

Warroad, Minn., November 9, 2010 – Five simple tips can help you save money and live more comfortably this winter.

They’re offered by Marvin Windows and Doors, which knows all about winterizing — the company is headquartered in Warroad, Minn., only six miles from the Canadian border!

Follow these easy steps and check out Marvin’s helpful home improvement video series and podcasts featuring TODAY show home improvement expert Lou Manfredini.

5 SIMPLE WINTERIZATION TIPS

1. Get a furnace tune-up and replace the filter. A clogged filter and an inefficient furnace could add as much as 5 percent to your heating bill. A tune-up is inexpensive and will not only save you money this winter, but also ensure a longer life for your furnace. Filters should be replaced monthly for best performance.

2. Install a programmable thermostat. This is one of the simplest, least expensive ways to save money year round. Program your thermostat for a lower temperature during the day when you’re at work and at night when you’re asleep. With the money you save, you can have a toasty warm house during the hours you’re relaxing at home.

3. Check your windows and doors for drafts. Run a lighted candle around the edge of your windows and doors. If the flame flickers, it’s a sign that you’ve got an energy-robbing draft. Close the gaps with caulk, weatherstripping or expanding foam.

4. Consider replacing your old, inefficient windows. If you’ve got old, inefficient windows throughout your home, you could be losing as much heat as if you left a 2-foot by 2-foot window open all winter! And when the temperature outside is 0 degrees Fahrenheit, the temperature on the inside glass of a single-pane window is only 15 degrees. Energy-efficient windows from a top manufacturer like Marvin can save you 15 to 25 percent on your monthly heating bill while making your home more comfortable.

5. Check your attic insulation. Heat rises, and if your attic is poorly insulated, those heating dollars are going right out through the roof. Have a qualified contractor check your attic insulation.

About the 2010 myMarvin Architect’s Challenge

The myMarvin Architect’s Challenge recognizes the best architecture by practitioners in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
